diplomsko delo
Abstract

Translation and analysis of technical texts in the case of kitchen vents |
Secondary abstract: |
Translation is a very complex process. Translators must have adequate knowledge from different fields and always have to be prepared to learn new terminology and follow modern trends and innovations. The theoretical part of the diploma thesis presents translation as a profession, types of translation processes and the actual translation process itself; furthermore, it discusses the term of an authentic translation, lists competences of a translator, and presents translation tools that are most commonly used by professional translators. Next, the diploma thesis focuses on technical texts; namely the types of technical texts and the process of translating them. It focuses on terminology issues and technical styles, which are typical for these kinds of texts on one hand, and describes how to grapple with a technical translation on the other. Finally, the thesis includes a presentation of the companies Gorenje, Bosch and Siemens as the authors of the analyzed user's manuals for kitchen vents. The aim of the empirical part was to present some findings regarding translation quality, and to determine the structures used in technical texts, specifically, whether appropriate terminology has been used, then, which manner of writing prevails in Slovene and German texts, and lastly, which form of addressing the reader is most common for both languages - direct or indirect. Data was collected from user's manuals for kitchen vents of the manufacturers Gorenje, Bosch and Siemens. Results have shown that appropriate terminology has been used and that the texts serve their purpose. Furthermore, an analysis of German and Slovene texts has shown that in German texts a lot of passive voice is used, whereas in Slovene texts active voice and verbal sentence structures are common. As regards translation quality according to ISO standards, the analyzed translations represent suitable equivalents of the originals. |
