Hardness and stress concepts understanding of 6th-8th grade pupils in primary school |
Secondary abstract: |
Design and Technology curriculum in primary school (y 12-14) encompases also physical and mechanical properties of design. When dealing with different materials such as wood and paper in the sixth class, plastics materials in the seventh class and metals in the eighth class, students learn about the properties of materials. In the mechanical properties of materials, students encounter the concepts of hardness and stress. Both terms are presented and explained thoroughly in this work. The methods of their specification / testing and various influences (temperature, time, radiation) that affect the quality of the measurement of individual material properties (hardness and stress) are given. There is a thorough presentation of construction concept, what the word construction is and what falls under that concept. A link between construction and the concepts of hardness and stress is also described. Students’ understanding of all three concepts (from 6th to 8th class) has been found by the survey. We researched whether the students’ sex, their school certificate and elective subjects related to Design and Technology affect their understanding of the concepts. This work gives suggestions to the teachers of Design and Technology how to improve the understanding of the concepts of hardness, stress and construction in the classes 6-8 of elementary school. The suggestion also includes a didactic accessory for testing hardness and stress of materials, a worksheet for checking the pupils’ knowledge, demonstrations of experiments, which can be done during the lessons and a questionnaire for the teachers to check their understanding of the concepts of hardness, stress and construction, which they teach. |

Abstract (ePrints): |
