Social networks of the elderly and the role of social pedagogue in institutional care |
Secondary abstract: |
In the theoretical part of the thesis, I focused on the elderly, on their institutional care, social relations in old age, and the competence of social pedagogic work. Firstly, I define life functions in old age and then I continue to present the main needs in this period. I also present demographic trends and the situation in Slovenia and the forecast of population ageing in the European Union. Further on, I touch the social roles of the elderly as well as stereotypes about old age, which often dominate our thinking. I identify the essential elements of quality ageing. I present institutional care and living in old people's homes and connect it with the elements of total institution. At the end of the theoretical part, I identify the importance of social networks and social relations in old age.
In the empirical part, I use semi-structured interviews with the elderly living in the old people's home Loški Potok to note the importance of social networks. I was especially interested in how the elderly are experiencing relationships with their family, roommates, friends and staff. Most of the elderly that I have interviewed, have maintained contact with their family in particular, which constitutes a large part of their social support. For quality living in old people's homes relationship with staff and roommates is also important. Half of the elderly have stayed in touch with their friends, whose visits always make their day. The elderly who feel well and have fewer health problems, are also included in the activities and events in the vicinity of the home. Mostly, the elderly want activities which take place in the home, they also want to socialize with younger generations. To conclude, on the basis of the interviews and literature, I have identified the role of social pedagogue with the elderly in institutional care. |

Abstract (ePrints): |
Najprej sem opredelila življenjske naloge v starosti, nadalje sem predstavila glavne potrebe v omenjenem obdobju. Opredelila sem bistvene elemente kakovostnega staranja, predstavila institucionalno varstvo, življenje v domu starejših in le-to povezala z elementi totalne institucije.
