Phosphate determination in water |
Secondary abstract: |
Water is a very important compound, as the entire life depends upon it. Direct discharges of municipal water, industrial effluents into rivers and lakes, as well as excessive use of fertilizers, pesticides are extremely harmful to the water. If water is contaminated for a long period of time this may lead to eutrophication of the water system in this area. Polluted water may also leach in the groundwater and contaminate drinking water, which can be prevented by the use of wastewater treatment plant.
In the thesis I determined the amount of phosphate in selected water samples. Samples were taken at various sites in Gorenjska. The presence of phosphate was determined using test kit for the determination of phosphate and spectrophotometric method. I have verified the accuracy of the spectrophotometric method by determining lower and upper limit of quantification, reproducibility of the results and trueness of the results. I determined the concentration of phosphate using the calibration curve method and the method of standard additions. The results were compared with the limit values for phosphate.
In the context of the methodological work I prepared a fieldwork, where the pupils can learn about the experimental work outside the laboratory. Pupils are introduced to the test kit for the determination of various ions dissolved in the water and water hardness and pH determination. Fieldwork is intended for pupils in 8th and 9th class who are attending elective Environmental Chemistry. |

Abstract (ePrints): |
