Water is a natural resource that allows organisms to live, but hydrosphere pollution is still present. The main sources of water pollution are households, industry, agriculture and livestock farming, accidents with spillages, leaks from tanks, transport, leaching and drainage from waste dumps and polluted rain. There are several categories of water pollutants which include ammonium, nitrate(V), nitrate(III) and phosphate ions, which are important indicators of water quality. Important parameters in determining the quality of the water are also biochemical oxygen demand, water hardness and pH. The values of the listed parameters can, among others, also be determined by an Aquamerck® kit. The analysis is based on colorimetric and titrimetric technique of determining the concentrations of substances in water. The kit allows rapid water analysis on the field, which is one of its advantages. It is also suitable for work in school. Quality work in school is also possible with the use of cooperative learning, which has the task not only gaining knowledge but also social development and positive impact on the emotional-motivational processes. Hydrosphere pollution, water analysis and cooperative learning are included in the PROFILES module, which also presents the result of the thesis. The module follows the philosophy of the PROFILES project, which is a project of the 7th European Framework Program. It is intended for teaching and learning science based on the socio-scientific context with inquiry learning. Developed module »Should we be worried if we drink some water in which we swim in the summer?« treats content about water pollution and water analysis, which is also the focus of teaching materials. This is an innovative approach to teaching science, where the important role is played by the interest of the students. This guarantees better motivation for learning and better science literacy. The decision on the content of the module was developed based on the analysis of curricula of some science subjects, where the Chemistry in the environment proved to be subject, that deals with the field that the module includes, most accurately. |
