Secondary abstract: Investigating early literacy activities in the preschool period has become more and more important in the recent years. In different sources and researches it is said that the development of literacy starts at the time of the child's birth and that preschool period has a big impact on it. The diploma paper »Early literacy« consists of the theoretical and empirical part. In the theoretical part I defined the notions of literacy, early literacy, emergent literacy and explored the effects of family and preschool environment on children's literacy. In the empirical part I checked understanding of the concept of the book and print on five and six years old children with the help of casually - non-experimental method and the check-list for assessing the understanding of the concept of the book and print by the authors M. Barrone, M. Mallette and S. Hong Xu (Pečjak, 2010, pages 106–107) . 160 children took part in this testing – 79 boys and 81 girls from three different kindergartens: Vrtec Braslovče, Vrtec Krško in Vrtec Šentvid in Ljubljana. The studies have shown that five and six year old children have problems with understanding the concept of the book and print, but these problems are not related to neither gender nor the place where children live. I also concluded that not all children solved the whole test correctly because they did not distinguish between the images and the text, not all of them indentified the word and only half of the tested children recognized lower-case letters.

V empiričnem delu sem s pomočjo kavzalno - neeksperimentalne metode in s ček listo za ocenjevanje razumevanja koncepta knjige in tiska avtoric M. Barone, M. Mallette in S. Hong Xu (Pečjak, 2010, str.
