Secondary title: The importance of teaching biology and sciene with living material
Secondary abstract: Vivarium is an important tool in the educational process, because it enables the learning objectives to be achieved faster and easier. It also allows the teachers to introduce new methods and techniques of teaching. By using the vivarium, teachers are able to bring the variety and diversity of nature closer to the students. It is important, however, for this tool not to be equated with teaching in the actual natural environment. Even though teachers are aware of the importance of incorporating living creatures into the lessons, classical teaching methods still prevail. The object and purpose of this thesis was to find out how often biology and natural sciences teachers implement lessons that are carried out outdoors, as well as finding out what it is that prevents their lessons being carried out in nature. Another subject of research was to determine how the living creatures in classrooms affect students' attitude towards nature and with what frequency can incorporating living creatures into the lessons be found in the curriculum. Students' attitude towards living creatures was studied using an interactive questionnaire. There were 130 students, all from the final three years of primary school that participated in the study. The results showed that most of the students who own a pet developed a better relationship with the living creatures. Still, there is an alarmingly high percentage of students who own a pet, but still have a negative attitude towards animals. Gender also plays a role in one's relationship with animals. Teachers also participated in the study. With the use of structured interview, the data concerning their care for animals that are kept in their classrooms was gathered, as well as the data on the frequency with which they carry out lessons in nature. It is important for teachers to be aware of their role in incorporating living creatures into the lessons, because it is their own attitude towards nature that gives an important example to the students.
