Secondary abstract: Maturation and learning are processes that are coherent and enable an individual to function. Both processes depend on the individual's experience, which is acquired from the environment. People with intellectual disabilities have got special characteristics in development which affect their capability of learning. They have got to be taught of skills which others learn spontaneously; this includes appropriate perception and formation of reactions to sensory stimuli. Method Snoezelen of multisensory stimulation provides an acquisition of the mentioned skills and enhancement of innate abilities. It also affects social and emotional area of functioning and it reduces the inappropriate behaviour. Therefore, everything we mentioned above consequently contributes to a better quality of life when it comes to people with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract (ePrints): Zorenje in učenje sta procesa, ki sta medsebojno povezana in omogočata posameznikovo funkcioniranje. Oba procesa sta odvisna od posameznikovih izkušenj, ki jih pridobi iz okolja. Osebe z motnjami v duševnem razvoju imajo posebne značilnosti v razvoju, kar posledično vpliva na njihovo zmožnost učenja. Potrebno jih je naučiti veščin in spretnosti, ki se jih večinska populacija nauči spontano. Sem štejemo tudi primerno zaznavanje in oblikovanje reakcij na senzorne dražljaje. Snoezelen je metoda, ki z multisenzorno stimulacijo omogoča pridobivanje omenjenih veščin in krepitev prirojenih sposobnosti. Obenem vpliva na socialno in emocionalno področje delovanja ter zmanjšuje stopnjo neprimernih oblik vedenja. Vse to posledično doprinese k izboljšanju kvalitete življenja oseb z motnjami v duševnem razvoju.
