Interpersonal relationships in early adulthood |
Secondary abstract: |
Interpersonal relationships in early adulthood, in people aged 25 to 30 vary considerably among individuals. Some place emphasis on partnership, and others on relations with friends. Even the relationship with parents and siblings are experienced by young adults in a variety of ways. Some have frequent and regular contact with their parents while some no longer have any relationship with their parents. These are two frequent situations hiding much more in between. Relationships are complex and bilateral, affected by many different factors, and as such are variable and certainly not self-explanatory.
The theoretical part of this diploma thesis describes theoretical starting points of adulthood: criteria for adulthood, transition to adulthood and characteristics of young people. Following this, I focused on the interrelations between young adults and their parents, relationships with siblings, other people of their own age, with their partner and relationship to (future) parenting. As part of the partnership, I also focused on single life, and in the context of parenting, I also explained some basic facts about family. Using the qualitative methodology in the empirical part I conducted interviews with four young adults aged from 25 to 30 years, who, in some characteristics, are similar to one another and yet different in others. Through these interviews, I learned about these four young people and their perspective on the period of adulthood, on transition into this period and interpersonal relationships with their loved ones. The purpose of this diploma thesis is therefore to explore the experience of interpersonal relationships with loved ones in the early adulthood.
Young adults have the feeling that they are adults, but their life styles differ considerably depending on un/employment, relationship with parents, communication with parents, relationship to partner or single life, values in partnership life, the importance of friends and people of their age as well as depending on experiencing the adulthood and attitudes towards parenting. |

Abstract (ePrints): |
