Secondary title: The role and approaches of a social pedagogue in eliminating stress among pupils in primary school
Secondary abstract: School can be a stress factor for many pupils as everyday school situations can cause numerous pressures and tensions. For physical and psycho-social health of a pupil it is necessary to alleviate harmful effects of stress in which a social pedagogue plays a vital role. In my thesis I examine stress related problems among pupils in elementary schools, where I research the role and approaches of a social pedagogue in eliminating stress among pupils in primary school. Empirical research within the framework of the graduate thesis contains qualitative analysis from five interviews with different social pedagogues working in guidance service in different elementary schools across Slovenia. Through analyzing the conversations with social pedagogues, I examined, inter alia, the following areas: situations, which, in opinion of social pedagogues, are stressful for pupils, and approaches that are used by social pedagogues to eliminate stress in pupils. I was interested if and to what extent do social pedagogues work with other professional workers at school on eliminating stress and what difficulties and dilemmas do they encounter in the field of eliminating stress in pupils. The interviewed social pedagogues are in opinion that the pupils in school are frequently confronted with stress and as stressful situations they cite conflicts and strained relationships with other pupils and teachers, poor school performance, parents' high expectations, knowledge examination and grading. We concluded from the interviews that in order to eliminate stress, social pedagogues make use of individual as well as group activities, the latter being used to improve relationships among pupils in the form of class meetings or smaller groups. In addition, to relieve stress, they use conversation, role play, Brain Gym exercises, relaxation techniques such as types of breathing techniques, visualization, EFT and autogenic training, drawing, exercise and games. It was established that teachers play an important role in alleviating stress in pupils. Furthermore, social pedagogues are working together with pedagogues, special pedagogues, psychologists, social workers, volunteers and if necessary with external institutions. Most interviewees cite uncertainty in their work and failure to help as difficulties and dilemmas in eliminating stress in pupils. Two of the interviewees see the problem in lack of parent teacher cooperation. In search of new ways of help, the most important is the pupil in need of help.
