Our research deals with high school students who visit technical grammar schools. The survey was done by a questionnaire that included 26 questions, which tested students` knowledge and understanding of photosynthesis. Vast majority of questions (25) were of closed-ended type, two of them were based on Likert Scale, and one question was of open-ended type. Students engaged in the research were from two grammar schools and they visited first, second and third year of their secondary education. In total, there were 227 interwied students, almost all of them were male. The research has shown that students` knowledge of photosythesis process is quite good. The hypothesis stated that the knowledge of students is inadequate, however the research has refuted it. 17 out of 24 questions were answered correctly by more than fifty percent of students. The results show that the students` knowledge is mainly factual, but we haven`t found any significant differences between various years of study. We had set four hypotheses for the study, two of which were confirmed and two rejected. Sedondly, results also show that students aren`t too fond of Biology and photosynthesis, but on the other hand they also think that the knowledge in question is useful in terms of general education. Furthermore, they also have no intention of taking Biology at the Matura examination. The research has shed some light on the concepts, which students find difficult to acquire. |
