This thesis is a presentation of my personal work and a survey of corelation between illustration and typography in childen's picture books.
In the begining of the theoretical part of my thesis I present few theoretical rules which are the basics of a good design, including illustration and typography. My work continues to the exploration of terms typography and illustration. I am especially interested in the exploration of children's books illustrations where I try to focus on the fine quality and its content, so the aim is to explore function of the illustration and typography and its reciprocal relationship.
The key role in its relationship is unity, where both parts are playing the same strong role and keeps us in the story which gives us a full experience. We could easily compare this to the music in films where the music has its best quality when it is not noticeable while watching the film. That way music actually gives a non-intrusive support to a »moving picture«. It's similar with typography and illustration where typography plays a (sometimes) submissive role and just play along »invisibly« with the illustration.
Characteristics in the illustrations in the correlation with typography are depending on many factors such as balance, texture, colour, line, space, composition, so I also deal with the anatomy of type, its style, form.
In the last part of my thesis I present personal work, a childrens picture book where I try to unite the type with illustration with its context. |
