Abstract

Secondary title: ǂThe ǂtranslation of military terminology in the novel Hostile waters
Secondary abstract: Translating literary fiction that relies on the terminology of a specific profession is a particularly difficult task since the translator must master not only the target and source languages and their cultures but also terminology used in the text. A good example of this is the novel Hostile Waters which portrays a maritime conflict between the Soviet and the American navies at the height of the Cold War. A distinct feature of the novel is the high concentration of military-based professional terminology, which requires a high degree of caution and professional competence from the translator. Translation shifts on the microstructural level can cause changes in the novel's macrostructure. In the analytical part of this diploma, difficulties in translating military terminology are presented in detail. Another key aspect of the thesis covers the section of the Slovenian Armed Forces that is responsible for this translation. Finally, we have also included practical advice for translators who deal with such terminology.
