Abstract

Secondary title: Alcohol dependence syndrome and the role of nurse in the treatment process
Secondary abstract: Alcohol dependence syndrome is a consequence of chronic excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks and is a long-term disease that develops over longer time, sometimes even 20 years or more. The purpose of this paper is to describe the alcohol dependence syndrome and the effects it causes. The causes that lead an individual to dependence have been described as well as the different ways in which different groups of population face alcohol. The role of nurse in the process of treating alcohol dependence has been emphasized and the reasons for excessive alcohol consumption among the youth have been highlighted. During the writing of this paper, a descriptive working method was used by studying expert literature and expert electronic sources. All of the data from the literature has been studied, analyzed, compared to available scientific knowledge and written down using Microsoft Word word-processing software. It has been discovered that the causes for alcohol dependence are increasing in number; however, alcohol is undoubtedly one of the main causes of dependence besides social environment and the persons with their individual personality traits. The consequences of alcohol dependence are manifested as physical and mental complications. Alcohol-induced behaviour differs from person to person; the youth consume alcohol due to peer pressure and the desire to be accepted, while the elderly drink because of loneliness and isolation. The treatment of alcohol dependence therefore has to be adapted to the person being treated. The nurse needs extensive specific knowledge to be able to work in the department for treatment of alcohol dependence syndrome but also requires developed communication skills, as communicating during the treatment process a therapeutic agent that helps the patient.
