Abstract

Osnovni namen raziskovanja esejistike Marjana Rožanca je bil prikazati nov vidik branja in razlaganja v slovenski literarni vedi trdno zasidrane in uveljavljene pisateljske avtoritete. Do sedaj uveljavljen pogled na Rožančev personalizem in bogoiskateljsko držo smo dopolnili s konceptom hominizacije in nadgradili razumevanje Rožančeve paradoksalne eksistence z vpeljavo Rožančevega t. i. narodnega/nacionalnega subjekta.

Secondary title: A Conceptual Image of Marjan Rožanc’s Essays from the Perspective of Erich Fromm’s Humanism
Secondary abstract: Slovenian literary studies is both firmly-anchored and prevailing. This authority appropriated for its essays examples from many philosophers, scientists, writers and thinkers, or merely looked for common traits and deviations in thinking and perspectives. My focus in writing this doctoral dissertation was directed at Rožanc's linking of his religiosity with topical problems of the Slovenian nation. I thus provided a content analysis of Rožanc's essayistic work in terms of paradoxical existence and considered it in line with the philosophy of Erich Fromm, especially in the framework of two fundamental life orientations - namely, the orientation of having and the orientation of being. I supplemented what has been the prevailing viewpoint on Rožanc's personalism and his God-seeking stance with the concept of humanisation, while extending the understanding of Rožanc's paradoxical existence by introducing Rožanc's so-called national subject. The research results can be summarized into the following conclusions: (1) in Rožanc's essayistic work the subject is revealed as having a paradoxical existence; (2) Rožanc's essayistic discourse points out that humanisation in the perspective of Christian ethics is of great importance for the transformation of the Slovenian nation. Fromm's thinking is the philosophical basis of this process; (3) Marjan Rožanc's essays are characterized by intense self-inquiry on topical social and political issues of Sloveneness; (4) Rožanc's critical view of democracy, which is defined by pessimistic thought, declines into resignation at the end of his life. An extensive part of the doctoral dissertation is devoted to presenting various interpretations of the postmodern subject. The complexity of this topic draws attention to the importance of research into existential issues, which have been placed into a broader social context. This work, thus, stands at the beginning of further research exploring the complex and fascinating relationship between literature and philosophy.
