Abstract

Secondary title: Modernist and postmodernist features in Drago Jančarʼs short stories
Secondary abstract: Drago Jančar is one of those Slovene authors whose works are known all over the Europe and world. His literary creations are not narrowly oriented and therefore he cannot be counted only as a representative of one literary period, but he represents different periods with his works. In this dissertation stems the fact, that Drago Jančar,s short prose cannot be divided into the modernistic period and postmodernistic period. The collections of short stories Romanje gospoda Houžvičke and O bledem hudodelcu contain more modernistic features. These modernistic features are: limited narrative time; no omniscient narrator; selection of personal view; no chronological sequence; sentences are not logical and make no sense; the story is left out; reality and fantasy are mixing; the focal character is a victim of society; use of undisclosed quotations which are in fact encrypted texts. The collection Smrt pri Mariji Snežni is placed between so called transitional collections, because some short stories contain more modernistic features and some more postmodernistic feature. On the other side we have collections Pogled angela, Augsburg in druge resnične pripovedi, Ultima Creatura, Prikazen iz Rovenske and Človek, ki je pogledal v tolmun, which contain more postmodernistic features. The postmodernistic features are: stream of consciousness is left out; social criticism; use of historical and fantasy motifs; no big stories - human is presented as an individual; presentation of old topic, shapes and forms; authors are not unified; hybridness, fragmentation, retreat from high literature to trivial, genre literature; description of small, intimate event; the subject is being softened - the individual has no support; no absolute truth; quotations are revealed - the text is not encrypted; major theme and motifs are History and Destiny; line between reality and fiction is blurred.
