magistrsko delo
Abstract

TRANSLATIONS OF THE NAMES OF MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURES IN J. R. R. TOLKIENS NOVEL HOBBIT AND IN THE FILM |
Secondary abstract: |
In the thesis we focused on the translation of the names of mythological creatures in J. R. R. Tolkien's novel Hobbit and in the film based on the novel. The primary intention of the analysis is to demonstrate the importance of translator's knowledge of mythology and of the existing translations, especially if literary works share the same theme. We noticed substantial differences in translations of names of creatures in literary translation and in film's subtitles, particularly contextually inappropriate expressions in literary translation. A detailed analysis showed that the Slovene literary translator of Hobbit, Dušan Ogrizek, used adaptation for translating names of creatures while in subtitles, a professional translator used mainly borrowed words. In the second part of the thesis we introduced comparative analysis of professional subtitles and fansubs of the film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Our hypothesis was that the greatest differences would occur in fansubs, mainly from the grammatical and semantical point of view. We analysed the subtitles according to the subtitling standards. The results confirmed that the fansubs contain more errors. The latter could be the consequence of translator's misunderstanding of the original text and non-compliance to the target group, the viewers. |
