Abstract

Secondary title: STUDENTS' SATISFACTION WITH MENTORS IN CLINICAL SETTINGS
Secondary abstract: Introduction: Studying nursing at the 1st Bologna degree allows students to acquire theoretical and methodological concepts and to transfer that knowledge into practice to solve professional and work-related problems. Mentors lead students in carrying out the tasks and help them achieve the competencies that they will need later in professional life. To optimize the acquisition of knowledge and skills it is crucial that the student is satisfied with his mentors in the clinical settings. The purpose of the study was to determine the satisfaction of students with mentors in the clinical setting. Methods: Using a review of the literature and descriptive methods we presented the concept of mentoring and described the role of mentors and students in clinical practice. The study was based on quantitative methodology. The survey was conducted at one of Slovenia’s institutions of higher education. The research sample consisted of 60 students of the second year who have participated at three clinical areas of expertise. Results: The survey showed that the majority of students are satisfied with their mentors and clinical environments. Students could engage more in the discussions at the staff meetings. There was also a lack of individual mentorship between the student and his mentor. We also found that there are differences in the evaluation of trainers depending on the field of practice. Discussion and conclusion: Mentoring students during clinical training has an important role. This role should be given much attention. For students to gain knowledge, it is necessary to provide good mentors. There should be continuous training of mentors. For the integration of theory and practice it is important to have good interactions between students, mentors and clinical coordinators of higher education institutions.
