Abstract

Secondary abstract: The thesis entitled The Illustrations of Janez Vidic explores in detail some of the works the artist created as a book illustrator with a strong presence in 20th%century Slovene visual art. After a period in which he visually chronicled everyday life in an internment camp, he gained early experience as a newspaper illustrator with the Partisans, where he also illustrated his first book. Acquiring a formal education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, where he studied at the undergraduate level from 1946%1950, with an additional two years spent in graduate school, Vidic soon established himself as a book illustrator. He first built a reputation illustrating children's literature, but quickly went on to work in other genres, with a particular affinity for themes related to war and national identity. Also discussed is Vidic's painting, perhaps most famous for its motifs from rural Styria, followed by a separate focus on his tenure as technical editor of the Obzorja publishing house, Maribor's former literary giant and one of the foremost cultural institutions in the city. Obzorja's foundation and history are described in a separate chapter, a significant part of which is dedicated to its longtime editor and executive Jože Košar, who headed the company at its peak. Having grown from a small business to an institution of national significance spanning multiple locations across the country, as well as a retail chain and a record company, the publisher triggered the cultural emancipation of Maribor in the 1960s and 1970s, but faced many challenges which began in the 1990s. After nearly a decade of financial turmoil, Obzorja closed its doors in 2003, leaving the city to face a major cultural and economic loss arguably still felt today. In relation to its former status in publishing, the lack of a unique illustration scene specific to Maribor is briefly analysed at the end of the work, emphasizing the part Vidic potentially played in its failure to develop as the technical editor of a publisher with major literary influence. In that sense, the thesis focuses almost as much on the various contexts of Vidic's work as it does on the art itself, with the aim of further illustrating the artist's significant role in Slovene art.
