Abstract

Secondary abstract: The Master’s thesis entails a presentation of the design of a Wine Culture Centre in Maribor, the programme of which would revive the old town wine cellar and strengthen the wine culture consciousness of the people. The wine-making and viticultural tradition dates back to 1847 when, right in the centre of Maribor, Vinag first came to life. The wine cellar located in the central town square of Trg Svobode is still one of the largest classical tunnel-type wine cellars in Central Europe. At the moment, though, the cellar is not serving its main purpose and is merely reminding people of its former glory days. The architectural design of the Wine Culture Centre as presented in this thesis is based on joining the existing infrastructure (Vinag wine cellar) with new infrastructure to be built in the unutilized part of town. Introducing a new Wine Culture Centre to Maribor would define and redesign the city block and the street that offers a splendid view of the wine-bearing Piramida hill. The grapes from Piramida could subsequently be used to produce Maribor-brand wine. By developing and keeping a rich programme, joining production, educational and tourist services, the Wine Culture Centre would undoubtedly enrich the local culture and help expand various activities and the development of these service lines, all while contributing to excellent international recognition and growth of the Podravje region.
