Abstract

Secondary title: AWARENESS OF COMPULSIVE OVERFEEDING AMONG ADOLESCENTS
Secondary abstract: Theoretical Basis: Compulsive overeating is an officially recognized form of eating disorder that is increasing among adolescents in developed world. One of the characteristics of compulsive overeating is a person’s loss of control over feeding; the person consumes enormous amounts of food, and the episodes of binge eating are repetitive. Compulsive overeating is a mental disorder, which reflects a deep psychological and emotional distress, as well as non-acceptance of oneself. The nurse must establish a therapeutic relationship with the patient in order to help him change these negative patterns. The aim of this thesis is to present compulsive overeating and the nurse’s role in the treatment of this form of eating disorder. Research methodology: In the theoretical part we used the descriptive method. In the empirical part we used a quantitative method and have included an anonymous questionnaire with 10 closed ended questions as an instrument of research. The obtained data was statistically analyzed, edited, visualized and described by descriptive statistics. Results: The results of the anonymous questionnaire showed that adolescents have already heard of compulsive overeating and that they possess poor knowledge of this form of eating disorder. 41 % of respondents have never heard of compulsive overeating. 40 % of respondents first heard about this eating disorder in primary school from their teachers. 56 % of the respondents believe that they are familiar with compulsive overeating. 78 % of the respondents would rank this disease among eating disorder, while only 14 % of respondents would classify the disease as mental disorder. 58 % of the respondents believe more time should be spent on learning and talking about compulsive overeating in school. Conclusion: We have found that students of secondary medical school have little knowledge of compulsive overeating and are under-educated when it comes to this form of eating disorder. Therefore, it would be reasonable if a nurse conducted health-educational activities on primary, secondary and tertiary level, for adolescents as well as for the parents, to educate them about eating disorders, healthy diet and healthy lifestyle.
