Abstract

Secondary title: KNOWLEDGE OF BIPOLAR AFFECTIVE DISORDERS
Secondary abstract: Theoretical basis and purpose: Bipolar affective disorder is a disease characterised by exchanging periods of mania and depression. The illness is incurable and may be caused by neurobiological, genetic, social and environmental factors. The disorder is still less-known, because the affected by it usually start seeking help during the depression stage. The purpose of the thesis is to introduce bipolar affective disorder, and to establish what amount of knowledge about the disorder possess students. Research methods: The method used was the quantitative research method. The data were gained with the help of a questionnaire consisting of 20 close-ended questions and was published on social network Facebook in a closed group containing more than 400 members of one of the faculties of health sciences. The questionnaire was published via online survey EnKlikAnketa with 100 students taking part in it. The research ran in February 2016. Results: The results have shown that the students are aware what bipolar affective disorder is, what symptoms of mania and depression are, whether the disorder is hereditary, which gender is more susceptible to it, and what the first periods affecting men and women look like. In addition to this, they are familiar with the factors causing the bipolar affective disorder and the means of the treatment. However, they are not familiar with the types of the disorder and if it is curable. Conclusion: The individual affected by bipolar disorder, suffers from mood swings that make life difficult. Living with the disease can be immensely difficult, if the affected person does not begin with its treatment. The doctor is consulted usually when then patient is already in the depression period. Bipolar affective disorder is a rare and not well-known illness in our surroundings; therefore, it is significant that the healthcare personnel and students are familiar with it.
