Abstract

Diplomsko delo primerja prevode angleškega uporabniškega vmesnika operacijskega sistema Ubuntu v dva jezika: nemščino in slovenščino.

Secondary title: ǂA ǂcomparative analysis of Slovenian and German translations of the English user interface of the Ubuntu computer operating system
Secondary abstract: The graduation thesis compares translations of the English-language user interface of the Ubuntu computer operating system into two languages: German and Slovenian. The thesis presents a brief historical overview of the Linux and Ubuntu computer operating systems, their characteristics, the translation-related components of the online tool Launchpad used for the development of Ubuntu, the types of user interfaces and their general characteristics, the process of localization and its position within translation studies, as well as common (general) obstacles to and strategies for translation, including a number of examples along with an amalgamation of their existing classifications within the field of translation studies. In doing so, the primary aim of the thesis is to discern the potential specifics of the translation of user interfaces and establish a classification that may serve as the foundation for the comparative analysis of the translations of the user interface of the Ubuntu operating system that follows. The comparative analysis itself focuses on examples of the translations of some of the individual elements of the user interface of the 14.04 version of the Ubuntu operating system, from English into German and Slovenian - particularly in terms of identifying the different translation problems which have presented themselves when translating into different languages and (in compliance with this or independently of it) the different translation strategies that were used.
