magistrsko delo
Abstract

Linguistic sexism and the use of generic personal pronouns in English |
Secondary abstract: |
The strive for social inclusion and political correctness on all levels, and especially on the linguistic one, has been increasingly present. Namely, language is considered to be the basic means of communication, which retains some forms of gender discrimination and various sexisms. Inequality between sexes can also be observed in English, where another problem represents the absence of an official singular generic personal pronoun that would refer to both genders. The thesis is focused on the linguistic sexism and the use generic personal pronouns in English. To understand the complexity of topic it was necessary to provide the historical survey of feminism and to introduce some key items related to linguistics. This was followed by the analysis of various texts with the main focus on the generic personal pronouns (he, she and they). The aim of the analysis was to establish differences between the genres pertaining to the natural and social sciences. Another crucial part of the thesis represents the survey that explores the public opinion and the perception of the use of generic personal pronouns in English. We came to the conclusion that despite numerous efforts by different movements and individuals fighting for linguistic equality, the use of generic personal pronouns is still subject to individual preference. Therefore, no consensus has been reached in English with regard to the use of a singular generic pronoun for persons. |
