Abstract

Secondary title: Seismic resistance of existing buildings with added light timber structure stories
Secondary abstract: Lack of new building area, high costs of new construction and developement of new lightweigh construction systems are the reasons people decide to add additional stories to existing buildings. Modern timber systems, like cross laminated timber and light timber frame system, are very light, they can be assembled quickly due to high level of prefabrication and have a possibility of distributed load transfer, which makes them the most suited materials for vertical expansions. In thesis the problem of vertical expansions is treated in terms of seismic resistance of structures with added stories. An extensive parametric study is performed showing the impact of changing number of added stories and variation of their stiffness to seismic response of structures. Examples how stiffness in light timber frame and CLT structures can be easily changed just by changing the type and distribution of fasteners are shown. For light timber frame system stiffness of wall elements is calculated based on known procedures and for determining the stiffness of CLT wall elements a new procedure is given. Parametric study shows how changing stiffness of the vertical expansion can have a significant effect on seismic forces and that in some cases vertical expansion can have a favorable effect on seismic resistance despite minor increase of mass of the structure.
