(diplomsko delo)
Abstract

Handling textiles in a nursing home in order to reduce infections |
Secondary abstract: |
Background: This bachelor thesis describes medical or healthcare textiles, their proper handling that serves to prevent healthcare-associated infections and their care from the point they are collected in various departments and transported to the laundry until they are re-introduced to the departments and re-used. This thesis also includes a short summary of how infections develop and which are the key actions that need to be adopted to prevent infections in a nursing home.
Methods: The empirical part includes a survey on the handling of medical textiles by nursing staff in a nursing home by means of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed by 35 members of nursing staff. The survey was carried out in April 2016 and contained 36 questions.
Results: It has been found that health care professionals are aware of the importance of proper handling of medical textiles, given that 66 % of respondents agree that medical textiles can be a source of spreading healthcare-associated infections. The rules adopted by the institution that serve to prevent hospital-acquired infections are complied with by the majority of its staff as seen from the results of the survey that show that all (100 %) respondents disinfect their hands prior and after using contaminated medical textiles and, in most cases, wear gloves and other types of protective equipment.
Discussion and conclusions: Textiles are nowadays applied in various areas and for various purposes – these include medical textiles. For this reason, prevention of healthcare-associated infections in nursing homes is of key importance and should be observed subject to the basis hospital-acquired infection prevention principles. |
