Abstract

Secondary title: Determination of the degree of depolymerisation of PET by means of titrations
Secondary abstract: Due to the increasing world population and the resulting increased production, use and disposal of plastic materials and recycling them has become a necessity. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is in the textile industry the most used synthetic material, however, the recycling of PET textile materials is less researched area. In this thesis PET fibers were depolymerized with the procedure neutral hydrolysis and the rate of depolymerization was determined by titration. The results showed that PET was most degraded at a temperature of 250 °C, a pressure of 39 bar, a ratio of PET: water 1:10 and a reaction time of 30 min. Titration have proven to be an appropriate method to evaluate the degree of degradation of PET. The conclusions of the thesis are promising and opening up new possibilities for research in the field of titrations as quick and easy methods.
