Abstract

Secondary title: Adolescents' violence against their parents
Secondary abstract: Youth violence against parents is increasing in foreign countries and in Slovenia over the years. First few studies done on this topic between 1980 and 1989 registered between 9.2% and 18.5% (Agnew and Huguley, 1989; Cornell and Gelles in Agnew and Huguley, 1989) of violent adolescents who perpetrate violence against their parents, while some recent researches show there are a good 34% of them (Ulman and Straus, 2000). All researches show the primary victims of this kind of violence are mothers – a good 20% (Ulman and Straus, 2000). According to the data provided by a USA court, 72% of adolescents were violent against towards their mothers (Routt and Anderson, 2011). According to the information provided by the FBI, 63.3% of youth violence is reported (Pavšič Mrevlje, 2014). For perpetrating violence against parents, boys are registered in majority, although the percentage of girls registered is not much lower. It is mostly about psychological harassment, which can develop into physical, but it is falling with years – until the age of 17. Authors in this field state the reasons lie in non-functional partner relationship, family violence between partners and against children, unsuitable upbringing, alcohol, drugs, and environment (for example: Cottrell, 2005; Routt and Anderson, 2011). The case in Slovenia is not much different; using questionnaires for professionals working in social services and an interview with the head of juvenile delinquency department, we found out what their experiences in the field of working with violent adolescents who exercise violence against their parents are like. Youth violence against parents starts between the adolescent’s age of 6 and 20 years, but it is more common to appear between 15 and 18 years, with the aggressors being mostly boys. It also seems that mothers are the primary victims of this kind of violence. Mostly it is about psychological violence which later grows into physical violence. Unsuitable – permissive upbringing, unsettled partner relationships, family violence between partners and against children, and substance abuse are mentioned as the main reasons for violence against parents. It is worth mentioning that during the last few years, such serious forms of violence are happening that desperate parents are even forced to call the police. In addition to that, the number of restraining orders issued against violent adolescents is increasing.
