magistrsko delo
Abstract

Domestication in children's literature on the example of the Slovene translation of the book "The wonderful wizard of Oz" |
Secondary abstract: |
Children's literature is an especially challenging type of literature, because it is written by adults who have different wishes and needs than the readers. In the theoretical part, this study deals with children's literature and its demands towards adults, when writing for children, about what children's literature has to convey and what it should be like. Furthermore, it pays attention to domestication and the idea to what extent the text should be domesticated or foreignised. The American author Frank Lyman Baum and his work The Wonderful Wizard of Oz or in translation Čarovnik iz Oza, which is also shortly summarised, is introduced for an easier understanding of the empirical part. In the empirical part the English original and the Slovene translation, written by Janko Moder, are compared. The emphasis is on the use of domestication in translation. It presents the use of domestication in the translation of names and other denominations, collocations, and culture-specific elements. Furthermore, the translator's frequent use of diminutives is exposed. Along with the comparison, an opinion on the translation solution as well as suggestions for possible changes and corrections are given. |
