diplomsko delo visokošolskega strokovnega študija Varnost in policijsko delo
Abstract

Violence in sports – analysis of media reporting on violence at sports events |
Secondary abstract: |
In this diploma paper we explored the media reporting of violence and the presence of it in sport. The purpose of this thesis was to explore three Slovene newspapers for the period of two years and to determine how much the violence is present in their reporting. We also wanted to discover the way the newspapers report about the violence in sport. The aim of my diploma thesis is to show through different individual events, that sport is not always something supreme and noble. Within sport, a lot of violence is present, not only by the athletes but also by the spectators. Top athletes are especially under the microscope, since the media and the public are watching their every move. Their slightest incident is punished with an article in the newspaper the following day.
The theoretical part deals with different forms of violence in sport, we define the terms which we dealt with, we present Slovene legislations and the laws of other European countries. Different countries have various methods and laws for preventing riots at sporting events. The thesis particularly presents individual cases from the years 2013 and 2014, which have been also, due to various forms of violence, the most "unfortunate" and "scandalous" for the world of sport. The empirical part of the thesis deals with the media coverage of violence in sport. We studied and analysed articles during the two year period in the three Slovene newspapers. Based on the analysis we determined which sport discipline is the most intertwined with violence. |
