magistrsko delo
Abstract

Physical abilities of students in 4th and 5th grade in relation to their academic achievement and place of living |
Secondary abstract: |
The main aim of this master thesis is to research how the academic success and physical fitness are connected in an individual environment and to determine whether there are differences in physical characteristics and motor abilities considering the place of living. The sample gathered 307 children from three primary schools in Slovenske gorice (country) and from three primary schools in the municipality Maribor (city). The data on physical characteristics and motor abilities were gathered from the data base physical education chart. The primary school students included in the research were divided according to the place of living (country, city), grade (4th, 5th) and according to the academic success or the combined average grade from five school subjects (very low average, medium average, rather high average and very high average grade). The data were analyzed with the help of the descriptive and inferential statistics, where we established the differences between the physical features and the motor abilities with the t-test, the connection to the academic success and physical fitness with the analysis of variance. The statistical typical significance was set at the ▫$\alpha$▫ level of 0.05. The results show a positive connection of the academic success and the physical fitness, meaning, the academically more successful students are physical fitter. The finding stands for both living environments and for both age groups. We established that the 4th grade students from the country and the city schools do not differ in physical features, meanwhile the 5th grade students form the country schools are heavier and have more subcutaneous fat. In average, the fourth and the fifth graders from country schools are physical fitter, whereas the statistically typical differences were in the favor of the fourth graders in one motor test and in the fifth grade the difference was noticed in two motor tasks. |
