magistrsko delo

Pavel Haas is a Czech composer who spent the last years of his life in the Theresienstadt concentration camp (Terezín). He was sent there after the German occupation of the Czech Republic in 1941. He was one of the most active composers in Theresienstadt and also one of the best students of the Czech composer Leoš Janáček. His works expressed the problems of the time, especially those written during his captivity in the camp. The music was emotionally charged and filled with symbols and allusions to various musical forms. Before his relocation, he had been expressing musical creativity for 20 years, starting from his time in music school. During this period, he composed over 50 pieces, seven of which were written in the camp. His style was influenced by the renowned Czech composer Leoš Janáček, with whom he also studied. Haas drew inspiration from Moravian folk songs, the music of Jewish synagogues, and art music composers such as Stravinsky, Honegger, Milhaud, and Poulec. During the Nazi attacks, it was forbidden to perform his works. On October 16, 1944, he was deported to the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz, where he died in a gas chamber shortly after arriving. This was the tragic end of his life. |
