In the time when we can buy most food in stores, children hardly know the origin of food ingredients. The purpose of my thesis was to provide children with a concrete experience of plants production, namely herbs, their processing, use in nutrition and a sensory experience of them.
I researched the knowledge of 3–6 year olds on herbs. Along herbs and products, containing herbs, I carried out verbal polls.
Based on the gained results, from which it is clear, that children poorly know herbs, I prepared different activities in an experimental group. Children came to know herbs through own experience, they grew them in a herbal garden, learned about their use in nutrition and sensuously experienced them. At the end of the activities I again questioned the children from the experimental and control group about herbs as before and compared the results.
I found out that children from the experimental group gained a lot of knowledge on herbs, but it is interesting, that the knowledge also increased in the control group. I conclude that active learning with a direct experience is a successful method of gaining knowledge on the plant food origin. During gardening children also developed social relationships, formed a relationship with human beings, got to know their needs and developed a positive attitude towards including herbs in their diet. |

Raziskovala sem, koliko 3–6 letni otroci vedo o zeliščih.
