Parents about disciplining their children |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
The main topic of this undergraduate dissertation is the disciplining of children in the family. The theoretical part provides deliberations on contemporary upbringing, definitions of different upbringing styles and the presentation of effects of particular upbringing styles on the development of a child. If just a couple of decades ago the authoritarian or the repressive upbringing style with the focus on an obedient individual was predominant, experts today warn about the expansion of another extreme, permissive upbringing with the aim of an independent yet fully developed personality, which in practice unfortunately is not realized. The most desirable is the interactive or democratic upbringing style, since the children who experience it become independent and self-confident and are functioning well in society.
Greater emphasis is put on a more detailed analysis of important aspects of disciplining, such as setting the rules and sticking with them, the need to set children limits and of course reactions to appropriate (for example praise) and inappropriate behaviour (for example punishment).
The empirical part provides results of the research that was carried out among 121 parents of preschool and elementary school children in the Savinjska region. It turned out that parents think that setting limits to children is important and at the same time they want to provide their children a loving and warm family environment. Unfortunately parents still very rarely involve children in determining limits and are probably not aware enough that in this way the child more easily understands and obeys the limits. A similar picture is shown at punishing, since a lot of parents convey the consequence following the undesirable behaviour after the child has already done something. This is also a part of preventive discipline, the importance of which the parents are aware about, but maybe still not enough.
After insisting on rules parents involved in the research feel good, the most frequent reasons for failing to insist on a rule are fatigue and tiredness from negotiating with the child. Parents in this research find it harder to set limits to older children, setting limits for a particular action is different in different development periods of children. They are convinced that disciplinary approaches are different in different development periods of a child and regarding the upbringing of their own children they try to raise them similarly and to treat them the same. |
