Sekundarni naslov: The use of alternative forms of communication in children with Down syndrome
Sekundarni povzetek: Expert findings are based on the concept, that in children with Down syndrome it is necessary to begin with early intervention in the field of communication already in the first months of life. The importance is assigned to the establishment of early interactions with the mother or relational person, the establishment of eye contact, to communicational exchange, to playing and among others to the encouragement of the development of oral motorics. In view of the child’s functioning and particularly with the intent to provide possibilities for the child to express in a manner adjusted to him, in early childhood are introduced augmentative and alternative forms of communication. These can be picture symbols, photographs, the use of communicators and other electronic devices, sign-supported communication (SSC) or sign language. The aim of the thesis was to compare different views of special and rehabilitation educators and speech therapists/auditory-verbal therapists and find out, whether there are any differences in views on encouraging early communication, the development of the orofacial field, effective approaches and communication strategies and the use of sign-supported communication (SSC) in children with Down syndrome. In the research participated 72 of the mentioned professionals, employed in the fields of education, health and social care. In the questionnaire, they evaluated different statements with a five-point rating scale about the importance of early communication, the development of the orofacial field, effective approaches and strategies of communication and the use of sign-supported communication in children with Down syndrome. The results of the research proved that the views of special and rehabilitation educators and speech therapists/auditory-verbal therapists are statistically different concerning important activities for the development of orofacial functions in children with Down syndrome. Regarding views on factors that encourage communication, approaches and strategies for communication with children and the use of sign-supported communication in children with Down syndrome the results did not prove statistically important differences.
