Povzetek

Prihod otroka z motnjami avtističnega spektra (MAS) zmoti družinsko življenje in vpliva na življenja vseh družinskih članov.

Sekundarni naslov: ǂThe ǂeffect of therapeutic treatment of children with autism spectrum disorder on thir parents' mental health
Sekundarni povzetek: Having a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) disrupts family life and affects the lives of family members. Due to insufficiency of therapeutic support for individuals with ASD in Slovenia, it is their parents who usually bear the burden of bringing up their children. However, the parental burden can have a negative impact on the child's mental health and wellbeing. Therefore, the research aimed to determine whether the parents' mental health can be affected by their child's inclusion in the therapeutic treatment. 36 parents with children with ASD took part in the research. The children have participated in therapy at the Institute for Autism and related disorders as part of the ZORA project. A series of questionnaires was developed for the purpose of the research, including: COPE - short version, Parental Stress Scale - PSS, Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale - WEMWBS, Satisfaction with life scale - SWLS and Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Short Depression Scale - CES-D 10. Parents filled out the series of questionnaires prior and after therapy. The children's progress was measured using the therapist's questionnaire. The results show that children's difficulties can be positively related to their parents' depression. Accepting their children promotes parents' wellbeing. The direct influence of the child's therapeutic treatment on their parents was not detected. Furthermore, the instrumental support, acquired throughout the therapy by parents, had a positive impact on their stress level and wellbeing. The obtained results helped us to understand the complex relation between the children's inclusion in therapy and the mental health of their parents. Moreover, they underlined the importance of the parents' participation in the child's therapy.
