(diplomsko delo)

ǂThe ǂrole of the nurse in preventing malnutrition in the intensive care unit |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
Introduction: Malnutrition is still a major healthcare problem in Slovenia and around the world. It represents a serious danger to the patient because of the mortality. It is very important to identify patients who are already malnourished or at risk of becoming so on time. This can reduce complications and improve the course of treatment. The role of a nurse is of big importance, because she takes care of the proper nutrition of the patient.
Methods: We used a quantitative method of research. We carried out a descriptive cross-sectional study. As an instrument, we used a survey questionnaire, which involved employees in the nursing team at Internal and Surgical Intensive Care Units.
Results: The results showed that the level of awareness about the necessity of carrying out nutritional screening was moderate, since the average value of the claims was 3.17. In both intensive care units, nutritional screening is only partly performed because the average value of these claims is 3.83. This means that they carry out measurements of body weight and height on a regular basis, but they do not use nutritional screening charts. This claim was assessed with a very low average value of 2.32. Most nurses think that they can recognize the correlation between complications of malnutrition and treatment outcomes, as the average assessment of claims was 3.86.
Discussion and conclusion: Nurses play an important role in recognizing malnutrition. However, they should work more closely with a dietitian and a doctor. This would require additional education and knowledge. As a result, they would participate in work and recognition of malnutrition more carefully. |
