diplomsko delo

Differences in the care of elderly parents based on gender of adult children |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
With this thesis I researched and tried to understand, how and what kind of long-term care children provide to their ill or disabeled parents. The main focus of thesis is on differences of provided support based on children gender. I wanted to present the integenerational solidarity in the family in case of ill or disabled parents. The number of elderly people is increasing and as a result, the need to care for the elderly is increasing. In general, the care is provided by family members, in most cases by children of elderly person. In my thesis, I included eight multi-member families. To be able to make an analyze based on gender, I interviewed at least two adult children, where in each case there was a difference in gender. Research showed that family structure has an important impact on intergenerational solidarity. In interviwed families, the relationship between parents and children is very close which is also reflected in provided support. Daughters provide more of emotional support, whereas sons intend to provide grather number of contacts. It turned out, that daughters take on a bigger burden and the role of the main carer of ill parents in comparison with sons, the exception being in the cases when a cared person lives with their son. At the time of writing, a new law on long-term care is being prepared, which is a good opportunity for Slovenia to strengthen the principle of gender equality in the field of long-term care. |
