The role of women in managerial positions within the security field |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
Lately, there has been a lot of talk about gender equality, not only in society in general, but especially in jobs where many areas of work are still labelled "male", including the field of security. For several years, media has been reporting on a number of projects and campaigns abroad on this topic, and a similar movement or change of public opinion has recently started in Slovenia, as confirmed by two events from the previous year: two women were selected as the leaders of the police and military, which is the first time this has happened in either organization. The appointment of the first Major General of the Slovenian Armed Forces was a particularly resounding event, as Major General Alenka Ermenc also became the first woman with such a title within NATO. This was also an indicator of how much progress we still must make regarding gender equality in the field of security. The goal of this thesis was to look at gender equality in Slovenia within the security field and to check that women have the same opportunities as men - both in employment and in the subsequent promotion and management of security teams. The goal was also to answer the question of whether things were moving forward or had stopped where they were. A look into publicly available statistics showed that the employment of women in the security field in Slovenia is significantly lower than the employment of men in the same field. A review of the literature showed that we are moving forward and striving for improvement, but there are still some hidden differences or prejudices about women employed in the security field, especially women holding managerial positions. The interview conducted with Simona Lesar confirmed the findings from previous research, but the responses showed the willingness in the security field towards change and employing people for their hard work and no longer for their gender. |
