In this master’s thesis, the author researched the experience of shame in women, that were in a violent intimate partner relationships. Due to the complex nature of the concept, the theoretical part of the thesis presents the definitions of violence by several different experts, its characteristics and types; followed by the introduction of the dynamics of the circle of violence between the victim and the perpetrator of the violence, the traumatic relationship, the importance of emotions and their role and characteristics in an intimate partnership. In the empirical part, the author used phenomenological research methods, that are mainly based on exploring the personal experience of a phenomenom. The author obtained the data through a semi-structured interviews of seventh participants about their experiences of violence in intimate partner relationships, most notably the feeling of shame. The results of the research showed, how the participants coped with experiencing the aforementioned feelings and whether they were in touch with the latter, and which feelings, besides shame, appeared in a violent intimate partner relationship. We found out, that all participants in the partnership came with the content of dysfunctional shame, despite the fact, that some of them had no experience of violence in the primary family. In an intimate partner relationship, participants primarily experience fear and guilt, and rarely feel shame. They addressed the latter feeling after they broke off the violent intimate partner relationship. Some were able to describe the bodily sensations of this feeling, but could not name it, or they could not define it well. Shame, to some extent, inhibited the iterruption of the cycle of violence, also because of the connection with other emotions that arose (fear, guilt and disgust), but on the other hand, it also played a key role in leaving the victims, when they were able to cope with inability to handle things differently. Participants experienced fuller contact with shame only after leaving a violent partnership. |
