Sekundarni naslov: ǂThe ǂrelationship between working memory and heart rate variability: a systematic literature review
Sekundarni povzetek: The neurovisceral integration model postulates that the brain areas, which process working memory demands, and areas which control the autonomic nervous system, are connected in the same functional circuit and are co-dependent. The hypothesis stems from the idea that the use of working memory capacities is reflected in an indicator of autonomic system activity - heart rate variability. This hypothesis was investigated in some empirical research. However, reviews of the literature about this specific subject are scarce or absent. By performing a systematic review of empirical articles, which have investigated the relationship between heart rate variability and working memory, we investigated whether there is a correlation between these two phenomena. The literature review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA recommendations for systematic literature reviews. In the final analysis 37 articles were included, which were in accordance with the prespecified criteria for inclusion. The analysis has revealed that authors consistently observe lower heart rate variability during working memory task in comparsion to during the rest. Furthermore, the relationship with heart rate variability was not revealed in the completion of the working memory tasks, as would be expected from the neurovisceral integration model. The correlations with resting heart rate variability were largely not statistically significant.
