magistrsko delo

Painted self-portrait image and the process of its digitization |

The master's thesis first defines the terms portrait and self-portrait in the painting world, which, however, leads to the question of why people from the very beginning of creation feel the need to represent and analyze themselves. In Latin, the term "portray" refers to "drawing in advance" or "representing" one's self. A possible fundamental reason for the emergence of the above is the desire to express ourselves to others, the external environment and society, and thus also creates an objective representation of the subjective self. In addition, today's artist is faced with the use of new art and painting techniques, which of course actively co-create the content of the expression. The adoption of new techniques are breaking down the boundaries of traditional media and are creating a message that reflects new ideas from the social and political perspective of the 21st century. New technologies thus adapt, facilitate and at the same time upgrade the author's experience in various artistic fields such as video, photography, installation, graphics, drawing and digital painting. The latter, digital painting, is an emerging and at the same time growing art form in which traditional painting techniques, such as watercolor, oil, impasto, etc. are applied to a blank file/digital "blank paper" with the help of a computer, graphic tablet and pen and needed software. Digital oil painting thus represents the golden thread of the master's thesis, as four works of art were created within it - self-portraits, which were key to the creation of this final work. The painting style of self-portraits relies in part on the opuses of old painters such as Albrecht Dürer, Francis Bacon, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, Lucian Freud and Nicola Samori. Based on their statements, I touch on the importance of eclectic action in terms of the growth of one's own artistic style, which unconsciously stems from previous artists and their works, be they giants of art or completely inconspicuous individual works that are anchored in our memory. After defining and analyzing their artistic style, the master's thesis continues in the description of the practical implementation, where I describe the steps of the process in which the works were created and a brief description of the two programs (Procreate and Paint Tool SAI) that I used. This is followed by an evaluation of the resulting art products, possible inconveniences that arose in the process of creation and printed materialization of works, and a final conclusion that discusses the nature, advantages and disadvantages of digital painting and the final idea of dialogue between digital and traditional oil painting. |
