My consideration of love in Slovene drama is drawn from Novalis's idea that love is dumb and can only speak through poetry. But a strong, pure feeling of love can also "sing" through drama when it is true love that is involved. Because the theme is a very complex one and drama is written a dialogue, I offer here merely a starting point for practical comparative analysis. Although love shies away from the word, drama is open to analysis since the words spoken by the dramatic characters are often less important than their actual meaning, and the subtext and context in which they are uttered. Except in very few cases, Slovene poetic drama describes above all the inability to love. It is interesting that love in drama only really "sings" when it is threatened. A dramatist who understood the power of the tragic in love was Ivan Cankar, but the foundation for dealing with the love between a man and a woman was the poet France Prešeren in The Baptism by the Savica, and so we can say that Slovene dramatists are the heirs to Prešeren and not Linhart. |
