V empiričnem delu diplomskega dela so predstavljeni rezultati raziskave, s katero smo želeli ugotoviti zadovoljstvo družinskih članov z oskrbo njihovega svojca, s prejetimi informacijami in s podporo, ki so jo prejemali s strani medicinskih sester v enoti intenzivne terapije. Metodologija raziskovanja. Uporabili smo deskriptivno metodo dela, za pridobitev želenih podatkov pa smo uporabili anonimen anketni vprašalnik. Sodelovalo je 50 družinskih članov, katerih svojci so bili v času izvedbe ankete hospitalizirani v enoti intenzivne terapije Bolnišnice Topolšica. Anketiranje je bilo izvedeno v mesecih julij, avgust in september 2011. Rezultati raziskave.

Sekundarni naslov: THE NURSE AND FAMILY MEMBERS OF A CRITICALLY ILL PATIENT IN THE INTENSIVE UNIT
Sekundarni povzetek: In the first, theoretical part of diploma work, the environment of intensive care unit has been presented as well as a role of a nurse in the interaction with family members of a criticaly ill patient and skills that are needed for efficient communication. The reactions of family members at a critical condition of their relative have been explained and their needs in the time when the patient is admitted to an intensive care unit. The empirical part of a paper presents the results of a research which point out the satisfaction of family members with the treatment of their hospitalized relative, the information that they have received and the support that has been offered by nurses in an intensive care unit. Methodology of the research. A descriptive method was used, an anonymous questionnaire was distributed among 50 family members whose relatives were hospitalized in the intensive care unit of a Topolšica hospital. The survey took place in June, July and August of 2011. The results of a research. The results have shown that the nurses did pay attention to the needs of the relatives and that the relatives regularly received intelligible information. The research shows that the relatives were offered emotional support by nurses and that they were satisfied with the care their sick relatives received in the time of the medical treatment. Conclusion. Family members must take an active role in the holistic medical treatment of a patient whose life is threatened. Their satisfaction depends on the recognition and fulfillment of their needs and expectations. That is one of the important indicators of quality in medical care.
