diplomsko delo

Stress in competitive sport |
Sekundarni povzetek: |
Every individual is faced with stress on a daily basis. We can define stress as a specific demand coming from the environment that triggers a specific reaction of the body. Therefore, every individual experiences and tackles these stressful environmental demands differently. Additionally, coping with stress depends also on the degree of the individual's personal resilience. This thesis examines the amount of stress athletes tend to experience, what are the most common stressors in sport, how are athletes coping with them and lastly, their self-evaluation of their personal resilience. The study encompasses 116 athletes of 14 years of age and above, of which 66 are men and 50 are women, all currently active in competitive sports. The results have shown that stress is present on a daily basis for all interviewed athletes. According to research, female athletes experience more stress on all measured aspects, compared to their male counterparts. The most frequent stress factors, stated among interviewees, proved to be school obligations, competition results and trainings. On the contrary, the least important stressor for athletes seem to be family relationships. Furthermore, adolescents attribute the highest levels of stress to the coordination of schoolwork and trainings, while the grown up athletes report the highest levels of stress when it comes to financial concerns. According to the self-evaluation part of the survey, athletes use various approaches to deal with stressful situations. Top-level and more experienced athletes report to use a greater number of techniques compared to less experienced and younger athletes. The most frequently used stress dealing approaches are active addressing, planning and acceptance of stress. Interestingly, athletes competing in senior categories frequently use the strategy of reshaping stress into a positive impulse. Overall, athletes assess their abilities to solve challenging situations as well developed. The results show that experienced athletes have better developed psychological factors when it comes to personal resilience than their younger colleagues, which helps them deal more efficiently with stressful situations. Moreover, older and experienced athletes proved to be highly motivated and dedicated, they express a high degree of focus, self-restraint and confidence, which enables them to deal successfully with challenging, stressful situations. |
