Sekundarni naslov: Derivation and storage of human embryonic stem cells from umbilical cord blood
Sekundarni povzetek: Theoretic basis: Stem cells are a very versatile group of cells, which can develop into more than two hundred different types of human body. They are present in almost all tissue and are activated when it is needed. Stem cells, taken at birth from the umbilical cord of the newborn have an incredible ability to adapt and divide and thus hold a great potential for renewal of the body and later their use to cure certain diseases. Intention: To present the procedure of taking umbilical cord blood after birth. This research intended to find out, what women's point of view on the possibility to take and store stem cells is, how many of them intend to decide for this procedure, where did they first encounter the possibility of storing stem cells and if they know the banking service providers in Slovenia who are active in the field. We also carried out interviews with two patients, who decided for the procedure of taking and storing of stem cells at the births of their children. Methods: In the writing of this dissertation, a descriptive method of work was used. Theoretic basis was presented with the use of domestic and foreign literature. The acquisition of data took into consideration the anonymity of the survey participants. The research was carried out in the Dr. Adolf Drolc hospital in Maribor, (Organisational Unit Women's Health), between patients that have visited their chosen gynaecologist on the day. The questionnaire consisted of 14 questions of open and closed type. In the scope of the research, we visited one of the private banks in Slovenia which deals in storage of stem cells. It is the company Neocelica. They presented their work procedures, who they cooperate with and how future parents, deciding for the storage of stem cells, can get into first contact with them. Results and discussion: We found that the taking and storage of stem cells in Slovenia aren't well known to the survey participants. The analysis showed that age, education and type of employment do not significantly affect the decision on taking and storage of stem cells. We concluded that parents, who are planning a family, do not know enough about the possibility of taking stem cells at birth, are not familiar with the storage bank services in Slovenia and do not know the difference between a private and a public bank. They also do not know enough about what stem cells represent in the body and what kind of healing they can be used for.
