magistrsko delo

Rezultate ankete sem primerjala s korpusno analizo študije primera.

Sekundarni naslov: The (non)prolongation of polysyllabic foreign masculine surnames of 3rd year grammar school students with the base ending in -r
Sekundarni povzetek: The master thesis deals with the problematic of prolonging the base through declension and formation of possessive adjectives in the case of foreign masculine surnames. The incentive for this thesis comes from the linguistic study of the case of (non)prolongation of polysyllabic foreign masculine surnames with the base ending in -r which has shown that there are certain discrepancies between the linguistic norm and the current use. The main question is how the prolongation of the base through declension of foreign surnames is perceived among 3rd year secondary school students in Slovenia. The theoretical part presents the existing rules for the formation of mono- or polysyllabic masculine nouns ending in -r, the findings of executed studies and the answers of experts to the questions connected with the problematic of this master thesis. The theoretical part also contains the aforementioned study, which was created under the mentorship and in co-authorship with Professor Irena Stramljič Breznik. Current school materials for Slovene lessons in the 2nd and 4th grades of secondary school have been reviewed for easier interpretation, namely how or if the problem at hand has been addressed in the school materials. The empirical part presents the research which included 305 3rd year secondary school students from Slovene grammar schools. An online survey containing 20 foreign masculine surnames ending in -r tested the morphological and formational ability of the respondents or rather the base prolongation in surnames ending in -j when declining and forming possessive adjectives. The results of the survey were compared to the case study corpus analysis. It has been concluded that the results of the corpus analysis and the research done on the students are comparable. The language users mostly tend to follow the current language norm and, according to the rules, generally (do not) prolong the surname base. Deviations from the current guidelines by The Slovene Orthography (2001) are shown only in one group of surnames - the ones with the base ending in -r and a silent e (type Moliere, Shakespeare, Voltaire). The reasons for this can be found either in not knowing the rules or in spelling guidelines, which are not in line with the prevailing use. Although the school materials for Slovene in the 2nd and 4th grades of grammar school put some focus on the changes in the declension of mono- or polysyllabic masculine nouns, this is only done on examples of common and local proper nouns. The respondents are mostly not familiar with the rules of forming such forms of foreign masculine surnames and tend to form them according to what sounds right. However, the encouraging finding is that most of Slovene grammar schools offers activities through which the students can upgrade their knowledge of Slovene, since the respondents do not show any additional interest in Slovene within their extracurricular activities.
