By the end of the year 2019, there have been first case reports of the new virus, which is endangering people’s lives. On the 7th of January 2019 Coronavirus was classified as respiratory disease COVID-19. After four months the virus has spread across more than 210 states and territories, where there were official accounts of more than 3 million infected with the virus and more than 225.000 victims. As a response to the fast spreading of the virus, and expected exponential growth of new infections, many countries have introduced a quarantine. Quarantine states that people should stay in their homes and companies should implement (if the workplace allows) work from home and prohibit any unnecessary physical human contact.

In this masters thesis we have determined to what extent the perception of property crime has changed in the period after the quarantine of covid-19 compared to the period before it. We have also examined the self-protection measures that individuals use to protect themselves from possible property crime. We found that the concern about breaking into the house was more present in the post quarantine period than in the pre quarantine period, but the differences were not statistically significant. The time of the survey (before and after the quarantine) was also not related to the assessment of the probability of burglary, the feeling of control over property crime or trust in the police. Amongst the self-protection measures, respondents use locking doors and closing windows to the greatest extent. We found that there is no statistically significant relationship between the use of home security measures and the assessment of the probability of property crime. |
