Povzetek

Napad na Kapitol, sedež ameriškega Kongresa, ki se je zgodil 6. januarja 2021, je bil prelomen dogodek tako v ameriški kot svetovni zgodovini in je jasno opozoril na vse hujšo krizo demokracije, ki v zadnjih letih dobiva pandemične razsežnosti. Nasilni vdor podpornikov takratnega predsednika Donalda Trumpa v Kapitol je bil groba kršitev demokratičnih načel, na katerih naj bi temeljila ameriška družba kot ena izmed najstarejših modernih demokratičnih držav, Združene države Amerike je postavil v družbene in politične okoliščine, s kakršnimi se niso srečale že vse od državljanske vojne. Zahteval je več smrtnih žrtev, povzročil občutno materialno škodo, predvsem pa je izpostavil tako krhkost demokracije kot tudi njeno presenetljivo odpornost proti populizmu in avtoritarnosti. Posledice napada in celotnega z njim povezanega političnega, družbenega in pravnega dogajanja predstavljajo nevaren precedens, ki nam kot demokratičnim družbam postavlja mnoge izzive in je morda ena izmed hujših groženj demokratični ureditvi v moderni dobi. V tem diplomskem delu smo poskušali odgovoriti na vprašanja, kako je do napada na Kapitol sploh prišlo, kaj se je dogajalo in kaj lahko po njem pričakujemo. Proučili smo vlogo teorij zarote, ekstremističnih skupin, družbenih sprememb ter političnih in pravnih dogajanj. Zaradi nedavnosti dogodka in ogromne količine literature, relevantnih oseb, dogodkov in dejstev, pričujoče diplomsko delo ni izčrpen pregled vseh, temveč poskuša na področje raziskovanja vpeljati kritične kriminološke uvide ter postaviti ustrezen raziskovalni okvir za bodoče delo.

Sekundarni povzetek:	The attack on the US Capitol, the seat of the US Congress, on the 6th of January 2021 was a landmark event in both American and world history, and a clear reminder of the deepening crisis of democracy, which has reached pandemic proportions in recent years. The violent storming of the Capitol by supporters of then-President Donald Trump was a blatant violation of the democratic principles on which American society, as one of the oldest modern democracies, is allegedly based, and placed the United States of America in a social and political context unlike anything it has faced since the Civil War. It has resulted in several deaths, caused significant property damage and, most notably, has simultaneously exposed both the fragility of democracy and its surprising resilience to populism and authoritarianism. The aftermath of the attack and all the political, social and legal developments surrounding it set a dangerous precedent that poses many challenges to us as democratic societies and is perhaps one of the most serious threats to the democratic order in the modern era. In this thesis we have sought to answer the questions of how the attack on the Capitol came about, what happened and what we can expect in its aftermath by examining the role of conspiracy theories, extremist groups, social transformations and political and legal dynamics. Due to the recent nature of the event and the vast amount of literature, relevant persons, events and facts, the present thesis is not an exhaustive overview of all of them, but rather an attempt to introduce critical criminological insights into the field of research and to set an adequate research framework for future work.
