Social networks have become an indispensable part of the lives of many people around the world. The rapid growth in the number of users in the last decade is outpacing research on their impact on interpersonal relationships. Research findings show that there are both positive and negative effects of social networks. The positive ones include increased opportunities to express yourself, connect and meet new people, while the negative effects include less focus on personal contacts, feelings of isolation and exposure to unrealistic standards. Generations that grew up without social networks feel their influence on interpersonal relationships, but for new generations the challenges are different, as they do not perceive this influence. The impact they have depends mainly on how individuals use them, how often and for what purpose. Regardless, it seems that traditional forms of interpersonal relationships have already been fundamentally changed under the influence of technology, including social media. |
